US Senate backs terror trial bill

BBC News -

The US Senate has passed controversial legislation endorsing President George W Bush's proposals to interrogate and prosecute foreign terror suspects.

The 65-34 vote followed Thursday's backing by the House of Representatives for almost identical legislation.

The new bill could be signed into law by the president within a few days.
Under the new legislation, special tribunals will be set up to question and try suspects being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"As our troops risk their lives to fight terrorism, this bill will ensure they are prepared to defeat today's enemies and address tomorrow's threats," President Bush said in a statement on Thursday.

Looks like the terrorists win again. We're only one bill away from treating American citizens accused of crimes the exact same way.

What kind of message are we sending to the rest of the world and, more importantly, what dangers are we putting our own military in when we throw the Geneva Conventions right out the window?

Reading on the Train

I'm currently reading a biography on Joseph Stalin. As I was reading a chapter while riding the train home from work, a passage caught my eye, and I felt like sharing it with you. It's a piece Stalin wrote for the paper, Rabochi put ('The Workers' Way').

Rabochi put was the successor to Pravda and was under Stalin's editorial control in October of 1917.

Here is the editorial:

The existing government of landlords and capitalists must be replaced by a new government, a government of workers and peasants.

The existing pseudo-government which was not elected by the people and which is not accountable to the people must be replaced by a government recognised by the people, elected by representatives of the workers, soldiers and peasants and held accountable to their representatives.

The Kishkin-Konovalov government should be replaced by a government of soviets of workers', soldiers', and peasants' deputies.

It just kind of struck a chord in me as I sat there looking out the window of the train, watching the world go by.

Chavez calls Bush 'the devil'

Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, has called George Bush, the US president, “the devil” in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
"The devil came here yesterday," Chavez said, referring to Bush's address at the UN assembly on Tuesday.

"He came here talking as if he were the owner of the world."

The leftist leader, who has joined Iran in opposing US influence, accused Washington of "domination, exploitation and pillage of peoples of the world."

"We appeal to the people of the United States and the world to halt this threat, which is like a sword hanging over our head," he said.

This guy definitely has my vote for U.S. President in '08.

I thought for sure it was going to be Ahmadinejad with the way he took both the United States and England to task. And then there was Chirac with his insistence on dialogue that had me smelling the familiar waft of the god-awful Freedom Fries cooking in the Capitol Hill cafeteria once again.

But when Chavez came straight out calling old Georgie boy "the devil", I nearly fell out of my chair from laughing and, in that moment, I knew I had a victor. Thank you, President Chavez. If you need any help with your U.S. presidential campaign, drop me a line.

WAR IS OVER

...if you want it.

I got a call from the Freewayblogger the other day asking me if I'd be interested in helping him hang a big sign on an overpass in San Francisco. I said I'd be glad to help. I met him at the overpass and we had the sign up in under two minutes. Pretty exciting stuff. And the panels were so big that he incorporated coat hangers into the process to facilitate a faster hanging time. It worked and the results looked great as he snapped off pictures from a nearby bridge.


I was wondering what he meant by a sign that said, "War is Over...if you want it". I heard him mention something about John Lennon and figured it must be a reference to a lyric in a Lennon song. I found it...

Auto-eroticism undoes driver

BRATISLAVA (Reuters) - A Slovak driver who crashed into a bus shocked rescuers who found him unconscious and half naked with a vacuum pump on his penis.

Police said the 42-year-old man, driving an old Citroen in the Slovak town of Levice, had ignored a "give way" sign.

"It's very likely he had auto-sex while driving, it is a matter of investigation. After the accident he was found lying in the seat, his pants were off and it (the pump) was placed on his penis," police officer Peter Polak told Reuters.

"I've never seen anything like this, nor have my colleagues," he added.

The man was taken to hospital with "head injuries". (quotation marks added by me)

Let this be a lesson to my male readers...Don't pump and drive.

After the events of September 11, 2001 took place, and as the dust was still settling, I saw the greatest outpouring of humanity from the rest of the world that I had ever seen directed at my country. It seemed to me, at that time, that after that horrific event, the entire world was opening it's arms to comfort us and to let us know that they'd be there to help us out.

As I was typing this, I thought to myself, "Was it true, though? Was there really that much support and sympathy, or was it just wishful thinking on your part?" I figured I'd better check it out to make sure. So I did a search on the internet and came up with this from Worldpress.org...

One Year Later: The initial outpouring of sympathy and support for the United States after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was without precedent. And it will likely not be seen again soon. In the year since, support for U.S. policies in the opinion pages of newspapers and magazines around the world has steadily dwindled. Today, the U.S. administration's determination to unseat Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and to launch preemptive strikes against any regime that poses, or might pose, a threat to American ascendency in world affairs has alarmed much of the international press. Shock, sympathy, and grief have largely been replaced by cynicism, mistrust, and anger.

So it would seem that I was correct in my recollection of the response from the rest of the world on that day. And what did we do with what could have been the greatest unifying moment in world history?

We pissed it all away!!! That's what we did!!!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm going to try my hardest to forget what happened five years ago this Monday.

I took a break from freewayblogging on Saturday and spent the day with my family at the beach. We all had a great time. My brother and I barbecued and our kids had a grand time playing in the sand and surf while their grandparents watched. No matter how foggy it was, we all felt pretty sunny inside.

Sunday morning I was bounding out the back door and right back at it again. I couldn't get the projector fired up fast enough to crank out more signs. I was surprised at how much more efficiently I'm able to produce them now. Before I knew it, I had more than twenty signs ready to be loaded into the car. And off I went...

Weekend Music Video

Sorry for posting the video late this weekend, but since it's a holiday weekend, and I've had my hands full with informing the masses on the San Francisco freeways, I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me.

Listening to one of the local radio stations, I noticed that they were going retro-80's all weekend so I figured I'd do the same. This song was one that Mrs. Cruiser and I loved to listen to when we were dating. She was happy to see I was posting it as my Weekend Music Video. So much so that we started dancing and singing along to it while we watched. The kids may never recover from it. Enjoy....

I didn't get time to do the Impeach thing on my blog today because I was too busy doing this...

Last night at around 11:00PM...paint drying on cardboard.

U.S.101 Northbound....side-of-the-road view

U.S. 101 Northbound .... snarled-in-traffic view.

U.S. 280 Southbound .... and most of the surrounding area, for that matter. This is the largest sign I've made yet. Letters are about 2 and a half feet tall.

These signs (and others that I couldn't get shots of) were put up at around 5:00 AM this morning. I was happy to see them still up while driving home this afternoon around 3:30 PM. I wonder how many people saw them in that length of time?

I wasn't the only one doing it, either. It was a nationwide effort. Check this out. And this.
